Protected and maintained biodiversity, nature-compatible agriculture, forestry and fishery, and development of biotechnological solutions are fundamental pillars for our sustainable future. The International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) represents biology already for 106 years and champions the cause of cross-disciplinary approaches in biology, especially those that lead to sustainability of biological resource utilization and of biodiversity protection. IUBS unites member nations and international scientific societies in this cause and also collaborates closely with other related scientific unions such as IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry), INQUA (International Union for Quarternary Research, IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences), among many others. IUBS works closely with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and collaborates with CBD in organizing the Science Forum for Policy at every COP event on Biodiversity. IUBS strives for freedom of science, equality as a human right, and equity of all nations, especially in current uncertain times when climate justice is being fought for as a basic human right, among other fundamental rights. IUBS stands by these principles in all its endeavours.
Karl-Josef Dietz,
President, IUBS
The 19th General Assembly of IUBS was held in Bengaluru in 1976, 50 years ago! The 35th General Assembly will celebrate this return to Bengaluru after 50 years.
Besides sessions for scientists in several important interdisciplinary Symposia on ecology, biodiversity and conservation, this General Assembly will also have sessions devoted to teachers and students since IUBS believes that pedagogy is an essential element in developing a global constituency that is equipped to contribute towards the conservation of biological diversity in all its forms. The Symposia topics also reflect this goal.
We hope that the academic atmosphere of Bengaluru, which is considered the scientific capital of India, will pervade the General Assembly and we warmly welcome all participants to this event.
The International Union of Biological Sciences is 106 years old, and the first Union of National Academies (Biology Sections) and Scientific Societies. IUBS represents the collective wisdom of global biologists with the aim to nurture biological diversity in all its forms. IUBS is closely associated with the International Science Council (ISC), and through the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) it engages globally at every COP meeting with its signature Science Forum which is meant to bring together the most eminent thinkers and practitioners to present scientific solutions to the pressing problems of the Anthropocene.
IUBS provides seed funding to valuable research programs and also funds research conferences and promotes Early Career Researchers (ECRs) through special programmes. IUBS promotes gender equality and fosters pedagogy in all forms.
The 35th General Assembly of IUBS will be held at the National Science Seminar Complex, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India.
Besides the regular business events requiring voting and participation by IUBS members, this GA will have a series of scientific and pedagogical symposia.
Proposed Symposia are on the following themes:
• One Health
• Science for conservation policies in Africa
• Marine/mangrove conservation
• Technology to map and monitor biodiversity
• Precision agriculture
• Pastoralism
• Geology–Biology interface
• Chemical Ecology in the Anthropocene
There will be special pedagogical sessions for College Teachers and Students on various aspects of biodiversity conservation and climate change
There will also be a four-day pre-GA proposal-writing workshop for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) (Theme: How Palaeontological Proxies can inform us about Climate Change Impacts on Biodiversity). This will be for 25 selected ECRs and will also be at the Indian Institute of Science. For more details, visit iubs.org.
